Position: Application Rationalization Business Analyst
Location: Seattle WA.
Duration: 3 months
Interview: Phone
Managers Note: looking for a Business Analyst with prior experience working on Windows XP to Windows 7 Migration project. This is a 3 month assignment in Seattle WA. The client is looking for specific experience performing Application Rationalization which is the process of reviewing all of the desktop applications they use in their Windows XP environment and working with IT, the business units and software vendors to determine what apps are required in the new environment, prioritize the apps, consolidate duplicate and redundant versions of apps, and create a single software catalog of all apps to be supported in the new Windows 7 environment.
Completed Tasks:
1. Inventory existing applications
2. Clean up inventory to determine valid applications (this has
been partially done and rationalized to 1700 apps )
a. Remove drivers
b. Remove hardware specific applications
c. Remove personal software
d. Remove unknown applications
e. Remove standard installation applets
3. True up applications to the latest version (or two versions if
supporting an older version for licensing or technical requirement)
Remaining Tasks:
For applications that are determined to require Research, are determined to be not compatible with Win7 for any available version of the vendor software, or for which a new version of the vendor app is required for Win7 compatible version is available:
4. Identify internally developed applications
a. Work with client to Identify internal client contacts for
internally developed applications
b. Contact client contacts to determine plan for providing a Win7
version (who is responsible, date required based on deploy schedule,
etc.)
5. Contact business unit managers for users of each application to
determine business requirement for software and potential alternatives to using the software (web based version, redundant with other licenses software, competing product, not justified/no longer needed,
etc.)
6. Identify and review redundant applications
7. Determine if application is rarely or never used
8. Assign a business value to application (low medium high)
9. Identify potential Win7 compatible versions available from Vendor
10. Determine gap in licenses/costs to procure Win7 compatible
version for quantity of version required (licensing costs)
11. Confirm location of software media and coordinate with UB team
to have media loaded on deployment server(s)
12. Confirm solution that addresses options for all software
currently used on XP PCs to be replaced by Win7.
13. Populate application database with attributes for each application
14. Track status of application readiness for each application
15. Finalize supported application list
Must have done this type of work before, be very organized, very good with interacting with clients, strong Excel/data manipulation skills (data analysts will be available to support this person for heavy data analysis).
