Short Description:

The Senior Database Architect is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing infrastructure to provide highly-complex, reliable, and scalable databases.

BWC is implementing a new Claims, Policy and Billing system.  This new implementation is shifting our Data warehouse and Reporting infrastructure from DB2/Hyperion to Oracle/Cognos.  The nature of our data is also changing, as data elements are changing purpose and semantics as part of the transition.

 

BWC's new system will have a transaction data store (TDS), operational data store (ODS) and a newly designed Oracle Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW).  With the move to an EDW, BWC will also be shifting from a relational based data warehouse towards dimensional/star-schema models.  This position will be required to aid BWC in this shift.  Additionally, this position will be responsible for taking requirements and designing, creating, tuning and supporting Oracle Data Warehouse databases.

 

-10 or more years of experience in design, development, modification and testing of databases designed to support Data Warehousing and BI business teams

-10 or more years of experience with design, development and support of normalized data structures (commonly referred to as Inmon)

-7 or more years of experience developing Data Warehouse databases using Oracle RDBMS platform and tools.

-5 or more years of experience with design, development, tuning and support of dimensional/star-schema based data structures including fact tables.

-5 or more years of experience with Kimball and Inmon methodologies

-5 or more years of experience with the AllFusion Erwin modeling tool, including Model Mart Repository advanced features (e.g. checkin/out, complete compare)

-3 or more years of experience in data profiling, data mining and data cleansing.3 or more years of experience in the use of organizational tools & methods (MS Excel, MS Word, MS outlook, VISIO, Clarity)

-Experience developing complex sql  against normalized as well as dimensional data structures

-Experience using oracle SQL*Plus, Toad, Oracle PL/SQL Developer

-Experience on an IBM/DB2 platform

-Experience in measuring and tuning the performance of Oracle Data Warehouse databases

-3 or more years of experience working with designers/developers who use the Cognos Business Intelligence tools.

-Ability to effectively communicate with business and IT staff

-Ability to quickly adapt to changes, enhancements, and new technologies

-Knowledge of the PowerSuite Claims, Policy, and Billing application

-Knowledge of Ohio BWC business model and processes

-Knowledge of property and casualty insurance systems

 

Typical Daily Activities:

-Work with PowerSuite SME to understand the PowerSuite application business functionality and write complex queries to understand how the data is stored in the PowerSuite Transactional System.

-Work with Cognos Framework Model SME, PowerSuite SME and other Data Architects to identify dimension and facts tables to be built.

-After designing dimension and fact tables, hold design review sessions to obtain approval and sign off.

-Deploy new tables directly to the test environment using the Erwin tool

-Produce diagrams and table/column definitions reports from Erwin and upload to the project Sharepoint site.

-Map the data from the Operational Data Store to the dimension/fact tables and create an ETL mapping document, using a predefined template, for the ETL developers.

-Work with Business Analysts and potentially business customers to verify requirements Work with IT ETL and Report Developers to communicate database designs, answer questions and refine/update ETL mapping documents as needed.

-Analysis and Performance tuning of queries developed to access dimensional and relational models

-Work with Business Analysts and potentially business customers to verify requirements
