JOB DESCRIPTION: 4 IMPORTANT THINGS TO HAVE IN RESUME TO BE QUALIFIED:
1. At least 3 years' experience in a "core" Business Analyst role. Meaning, not just someone who has done Business Analysis tasks within the framework of projects or worked with Business Analysts. We want to emphasize that they have been in the specific role with experience
2. Experience in multiple SDLC methodologies (RUP, Iterative, Agile, etc) as a BA is versus only having worked in a single process is desired. Shows adaptability as these positions may ask them to do similarly.
3. Prior Insurance industry experience is good. Specifically a Personal Lines (Auto/Homeowners/Umbrella) carrier is better. Specifically in the Product or Distribution areas is best.
4. Having worked directly with business/end users to gather requirements versus other business side Business Analysts (not sure if this is something you can divine from resumes or not) or anything else that demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with non-technical people.
Job Functions:
• A Business System Analyst (BSA) is the face of IT and is the primary interface with the Business. A successful BSA acts as a trusted partner to the business team to elicit and understand business needs to provide efficient solution options, and challenge assumptions to develop business insights and eliminate ambiguity.
• A successful BSA should have strong business acumen to understand the business strategy, customers' objectives, processes, and products in order to make educated recommendations.
• A strong BSA understands enterprise technology to drive technology solution in collaboration with architects and SMEs. Working with development and testing team to deliver a high quality software product
• Performs impact analysis of application changes across various components, holding an end-to-end view of the system.
• Works with Business and other stakeholders in defining project scope and business requirements by using various elicitation techniques.
• Develops functional and non-functional specifications including the standard BSA artifacts like uses-cases, scenarios, screen specifications, screen mockups, and interface/reports specifications, Business process models (uml/bpmn) etc.
• Facilitates stakeholder review sessions and sign off process
• Supports the application subject matter experts (SMEs) in the development of estimates
• Supports application testing team by creating testable functional requirements and reviewing/suggesting test cases.
• Supports project implementation by participating in software shakeout activities.
• Performs quality review checks on project deliverables.
• Performs assessment of risks, dependencies and constraints from scope and requirements prospective and works with the project manager to manage the project risks.
• Supports the project manager in preparing requirements related milestones and schedules. Tracks and reports requirements progress and status.
• Records estimated vs. actual hours spent and works with the BSA manager to assess the resource need for the project.
• Helps the BSA manager and project managers to drive day-to-day prioritization of work, projects tasks, action items, project features.
• Supports application SME and architects in creating the conceptual design of system, where appropriate.
• Mentors junior BSAs and also help in onboarding and training new BSAs.
• Performs business process re-engineering, as required.
• Proactively participate in process improvements.
Required skills:
• Solid Information Technology background – Good knowledge of enterprise technology. Good experience in working with multi-tiered systems.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to details

• Positive and self-motivated with a burning desire to succeed
• Basic BSA skills – excellent communicator, problem-solver, critical thinker, and not a rigid follower (waiting for order). When situation calls for it, gets involved and doesn't stick to the assigned role
• Resourceful - ability to find the answers to questions and not wait for the answers to be provided. Ability to find alternative paths through the organization and involve the right people at the right time
• Thorough – ability of identifying gaps by digging through every part of the organization trying to uncover information and data that was left behind that could be valuable for analysis
• Create alignment and ownership around the Solution – ability to resolve conflicts and ensure that the solution aligns with the business expectations and needs
• An expert in detecting ambiguity – to be aware that nearly everything in business is ambiguous and that there are many sides to every problem and solution. Ability to remove ambiguity and provide clarity
• Strong concepts of project management – ability to manage expectation around dates and timeline. Good understanding of SDLC and change control process.
• Vision and big-picture – Ability to understand the business motivation model (Mission, Strategy, and Tactics; Vision, goals, and objectives). Being able to look at the big-picture before diving deep into solution
• Abstraction - Understand the "why and what" before the "how". Ability to extract the essence of the business need even if business is providing their requirements in form of a solution
• Listen to customer (internal and external) – Ability to actively listen to the customer needs.
• Be a trusted advisor – Ability to collaborate with business and IT peers. Being reliable and credible by consistently delivering high quality results. Challenge assumptions to develop business insights
• Researcher – Ability to work with limited input and do research to gather the required information. Ability to make quick decisions and able to "think on your feet" with limited information.
• Tolerance to perturbation – ability to adapt to change. Flexible with changing priorities and ready to change direction is a short notice
• Process oriented – Ability to understand the current processes and adhere to them. Ability to identify inefficiencies and propose solutions to improve productivity.
• BSA artifacts – Excellent knowledge of creating standard BSA artifacts
• This BSA position is for the Personal Lines Insurance department of Farmers Insurance. In an ideal situation, addition to the above skills, a BSA candidate for this role should have a solid experience with P&C Policy Administration Systems and a strong P&C Business domain knowledge. This skill is desirable but not mandatory with the assumption that a good BSA will be able to pick up any Business domain.
