Role: Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Duration: 9/23/14 to 2/1/15

Project Description:

 

We currently are looking for engineers with an emphasis in the following areas: Cloud Infrastructure Engineer – Development and Operations: First and foremost, the Cloud Infrastructure Engineer must have a mindset for the infrastructure as code paradigm.  Candidates must be able to manage, maintain, and troubleshoot systems from the application level down to the operating system and hardware level. Also, candidates must have experience with network administration, including interface configuration and routing.  Must be able to deploy and maintain an OpenStack environment.  Must be able to create OS and application monitoring solution.  Must have experience with Linux system administration.  Must be able to implement solutions in an automated and repeatable fashion using infrastructure automation tools such as Opscode Chef.  Must be able to code in multiple languages, for example Ruby, Python, or Bash. Must be able to create self-service solutions.  In addition, candidates must be comfortable planning team activities in addition to simply performing tasks.  Finally, candidates must have a passion for learning.

 

Position Overview:

 

Responsibilities/Deliverables that the resource will be responsible for:

·         Operating and maintaining an OpenStack cloud ·         Infrastructure automation ·         High comfort level with Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu ·         Aggressive Refactoring ·         Comfortable contributing in an agile team cadence ·         Available to be part of an on-call rotation ·         Developing metrics to track and monitor performance of infrastructure

 

 

Skills Overview:

What are the MUST have skills that you are looking for in a candidate?

At least five years of relevant experience in the following areas: ·         Virtualization software technology ·         Storage virtualization technology ·         Agile practices, including automated testing ·         Network configuration ·         Linux system administration ·         Infrastructure automation Nice to have experience in the following areas:  ·         Ruby or Python ·         REST web services ·         Opscode Chef ·         OpenStack ·         Ceph storage

 

What are the technologies and the depth of the technologies that a candidate must have in order to be successful in this role?

·         Experience with cloud platforms (VMWare, Zen, or OpenStack) ·         Linux system administration ·         Network administration ·         Ruby or Python

 

What are the soft skills that you feel candidates must-have in order to be successful in this role?

·         Able to use a wide variety of open source technologies and tools ·         Comfort with collaboration, open communication and reaching across functional borders. ·         Able to multitask ·         Able to deal with ambiguous requirements while solving complicated problems ·         Team player – willing to work closely with team members when solving problems

·         When you are developing a software solution, how do you decide when it is "good enough"? ·         As a software developer, how would you communicate to team members to maintain good team communication?  In other words, in your opinion, what are the elements of good individual and team communication on a software development team? ·         How would you go about making changes to production environments while ensuring quality and minimal downtime? ·         How would you approach the following situation in your job?  Every couple of days, a cloud management process becomes unresponsive preventing users from launching instances.  The solution has been to ssh to the controller machine and manually restart the service.
